SQUIRREL-EQUALITY: COMMON MYTHS ON SQUIRRELS

COMMON MYTHS ABOUT SQUIRRELS

1. SQUIRRELS ARE RATS WITH TAILS

NOT A RAT.
They're not. They are of the family Sciuridae, while the
genus Rattus is a member of the family Muridae.

2. SQUIRRELS STEAL FOOD FROM BIRDS

To the squirrel, this food looks like it is up for grabs.
They are a part of the ecosystem, and they need the food.
Therefore, it is theirs. If they have taken from your bird feeder
it is because they do not understand that the food is not meant for them.
You can't expect them to understand that. In the wild, if food is lying around,
it is up for grabs. If you left food sitting out, the squirrels have no way of
telling that it is not for them. They see food lying around as up for grabs.

3. SQUIRRELS ARE PESTS

Squirrels are important parts of the ecosystem,
and therefore not pests. They also plant lots of trees, proving my point that
they are useful and important. They combat climate change and help the world.

Hopefully, this helps you understand that squirrels are good.
